Paul Gillespie, president and CEO of the
Toronto-based Kids' Internet Safety Alliance (KINSA), says sexual extortion has
become a major concern for law enforcement officials worldwide.
In the month before Amanda Todd’s death, Todd
posted a video on YouTube in which she used handwritten cards to convey her
story. She wrote that her troubles started after an unknown person talked her
into exposing herself in front of a webcam.
Law enforcement officials agree that sextortion
is an increasing problem, but because it is still a relatively new phenomenon,
there is no hard data on how frequently it happens, says Michelle Collins,
vice-president of the exploited children division of the U.S. National Center
for Missing & Exploited Children.
